Anyone who has worked with LTO tapes is well aware of the challenges. Let’s just say that they are anything but easy to deal with. From the lack of accessibility to the complexity of management and overall costs of maintaining and expanding aging tape libraries, the challenges have been a thorn in the side of many an IT administrator. Historically, organizations have bitten the proverbial bullet and implemented tapes for long-term data archiving and backup, inheriting along with it all the associated problems. However, the remote aspect of distributed teams during COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the accessibility and maintenance challenges inherent to large data tape libraries.

Ransomware attacks dominated the cybersecurity landscape in 2020 and will remain a top threat in 2021, posing major challenges for both public and private institutions. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre recently reported that it handled more than three times as many ransomware incidents as in the previous year. New variations of attacks are always testing security defenses, including more sophisticated “phishing” schemes — taking advantage of human error or vulnerabilities by duping individuals into clicking a malicious link and thereby enabling ransomware to infect an organization.

We recently announced general availability of Cloudian’s HyperStore object storage on VMware Cloud Foundation with Tanzu.  HyperStore® is S3-compatible object storage, which now integrates with VMware’s vSAN Data Persistence platform to provide a containerized version of HyperStore managed by Kubernetes. In this blog, I describe the steps to set up HyperStore in this environment so that apps can consume S3 object storage.  The setup can either use kubectl command-line operations or the vSphere Client User Interface (VC UI).  Here we focus on using the VC UI.

Reading Brendan Burns’ The History of Kubernetes & the Community Behind It, I was struck by the common technical foundations of Kubernetes and object storage.  Burns lists Kubernetes’ “basic feature set” as an orchestrator to deploy and manage containers as (1) Replication to deploy multiple instances of an application; (2) Load balancing and service discovery to route traffic to these replicated containers; (3) Basic health checking and repair to ensure a self-healing system; (4) Scheduling to group many machines into a single pool and distribute work to them.
